Find location of an IP address (beta)

This online tool will help you estimate the geographical location of any IP address, and place it on the map. Unlike other similar apps online, this one is completely free to use, will never make you solve captchas (there are limits though), or obscure data behind advertisements, and it uses data from multiple databases for maximum accuracy. Fast, simple, and free.

Geolocation is a technical term that describes this technique of using, in this case your IP address (which is assigned to every device that is connected to the Internet), for determining its real world geographical location. Geolocation is very commonly used by services like Netflix and YouTube when determining the country of origin of their users, which is then used to restrict content according to location. Another good example is BBC, which blocks most of their media content from showing if they detect a non-UK IP address.
Other use cases for this include simply revealing where some anonymous person is from when you have their IP address. And finally, this can be used just for curiosity's sake, for example, to test your own IP address to see how close someone could trace down your geographical location if they had your IP address.

Start by entering an IP address you want to lookup using dotted notation (i.e. 142.250.191.174), or instead you can enter a domain name (i.e. www.reddit.com).
You can also lookup your own IP address.

How accurate is this?

A point should be made that it is pretty much impossible to get your exact physical home address only from your IP address, so no IP locator tool you can find online will give you 100% accuracy. Such tools and databases are still very useful, however, because you are very likely to locate the exact country, and probably the exact city for that IP address, but that is pretty much it. The accuracy of this will ultimately depend on the database that is being used to query those IP addresses.

The primary IP Geolocation database that we use, MaxMind, claims the following:

In our recent tests, the downloadable databases were 99.8% accurate on a country level, 80% accurate on a state level in the US, and 68% accurate for cities in the US within a 50 kilometer radius. MaxMind: How accurate is GeoIP2?

However, keep in mind that whoever is trying to track you down, may have access to a more accurate database and thus be able to get a more precise location from your IP address.

To find the exact physical address of an IP address, someone would have to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP), and ask them to provide such information since they are the ones who would have it. However, your ISP is very unlikely to give up that information to anyone other than the police or some other authority.

Finally, if you tried looking up your own IP address, and were surprised at how accurately someone could get your location, and if your privacy is a real concern to you, then you may want to start using additional software to hide your real IP address and remain truly anonymous.

How to get someone's IP address:

Here is a scenario - you are talking to someone on the internet who is hiding behind some anonymous username, and you want to find out where they are from - country/city/etc. That would be easy if you knew their IP address, but how would you get that from them? Simply asking them to visit WhatIsMyIPAddress.com or whatever, and tell the address to you is not an option. However, there are ways to trick someone into revealing their IP address without them even realizing that. Coming soon!

Do you provide an API for this data?

Not at the moment, no. Using any sort of automated bot that scrapes any of the data shown on this page will get your IP address blacklisted.
